Cragganmore 1999, Malts of Scotland (en)

This bottle finished in second position (in fact very close to the winner, the 36 years old Glenlivet: 0,09 points . This is really a great quality for money. It also won the "coup de coeur" price, meaning it is really good stuff for the money. The highest points received is 92 (accorded by 2 tasters)  and the lowest 78. Again no unanimity.

Mars	Nose: Fruity exuberant (lime, physalis, kiwi, passion fruit, pineapple, mango, coconut, ...), wax, spices, bread, paper, cardboard, grapefruit. A true exotic fruit basket. Taste: Ultra fruity, very lemony with a bit of kiwi and spice. Powerful. Final: bitter, exotic fruits, lemon, unbalanced and rather peculiar (in a good way). Comments: It is better to avoid adding water as this imbalance even more and you lose exotic fruit. Aeration also makes it lose a little in flavor. I'm anxious to know what it is because I literally loved this whisky. As good on my scale as a BenRiach 1976! But also different!
PatGVA	Colour: tile Nose: pepper, oriental spices, hay, wet sheet, wet wool, super sour cream, apple chard, old butter, vanilla, pastry, sugar candy, it is very beautiful Mouth: pepper, fresh wood, mocha, dark chocolate, sweet touch of praline, Final: powerful balanced on dark chocolate, beautiful long development

Alexandre

The nose shows a beautiful palette of yellow fruit (peach, pear) in relative dryness (dry wood, wax). The power and complexity are moderate, it does not help the expressiveness. With aeration, lavender appears, while the fruit is a little softer. The palate is fruity, in the continuity of the nose. There is also the farm, and something more plant-ish (peat?). Then appears an unpleasant sensation of uncontrolled alcoholic power. It is very strong, the chili and sulfur, and this prevents proper development of aromas. The final, long, remains on the feeling of power, with spice, minerality and a little coffee. Aeration reveals the embers and smoke. Finally, a whisky with uncontrolled power, especially in the mouth.

Bunnahabhain 20 years old, Master of Malt (en)

This Bunnahabhain finished in third position, but with an insignificant difference compared with the second: 0.16 points. Once again Master of Malt sent us a beautiful bottle. Too bad it was already sold out with the publication of results. The best rating assigned to this whisky is 91 points (assigned by 3 different tasters) while the lowest score is 74. Once again in the WDTS, no bottles unanimous. The difference between extreme scores is 17 points.

Dede	Color: Amber Nose: Starts a dry sherry evoking a Fino or Amontillado, with notes of organic black mushrooms, burnt rubber and black powder growing on to more gourmet caramel frame, fresh walnuts and dried apricots. Very nice nose though slightly marked by alcohol before aeration. Palate: The attack is fresh and powerful, with aromas and frankly organic sulfur but without being disagreeable. Black mushrooms, rubber, cocoa bitter, but also tangy mandarin here share the limelight, before the bitterness of the walnuts takes over and then do a subtle exotic touch takes you to the final. Final: Rather long, it leaves the palate the memory of sulfur mixed with the exotic papaya and overripe bitter cocoa. Conclusion: An excellent sherry cask to its eye more on the side of aromas and organic sulfur than to gluttony. Will not please everyone, but quite to my taste.
jmputz	Color: Brown Nose is perfectly balanced. All in smoothness, thi indisputable sherry-like nose is pleasantly complex. Smells of milk chocolate, sherry, mocha with a nice impression of freshness in the background. The sherry is clearly dominant in the mouth also. here also a nice balance and freshness of the nose makes room to very discrete notes of tannins. The mouth is also quite complex, warm and leaves an excellent impression. Here too, a few notes of chocolate. The finish is exceptionally long. Feel the warmth of sherry, these pleasant notes of chocolate and mocha persist for many minutes.
Jolie_Grenouille	Color: Light Mahogany Nose: Creme brulée, caramel, dried fruits with smoky notes... It is a sherry casked. Alcohol is very discreet, well-integrated. No loss to ventilation. Palate: A good sherry very fruity, slightly woody, very nice. We find these quite nice smoky notes. Alcohol is also discreet. Finish: Long, fruity, gourmand. Alcohol is a little present which further strengthens the finish... Really nice. A nice whisky to taste (eg after a meal with a chocolate dessert).

Corbuso

Colour: Amber Nose: Yeasty, slightly meaty, sulphury and vegetal. A sherry monster with strong yeasty-sulphury influence. Taste: Rich, juicy, very fruity, on orange, tangerine, brambleberries, treacle, dates, some sulphur and vegetamine. The finish is long, sticky, syrupy, on sulphur, vegetamine, corn syrup, tangerine, brambleberries and orange maramalde. Impression: A sherry monster, with too much suplhury-vegetamine flavours to my liking. For the sherry freaks.

Bunnahabhain 20 years old, master of Malt (fr)

Ce Bunnahabhain a fini en troisième position, mais avec un écart insignifiant par rapport au second: 0,16 points. Une fois de plus Master of Malt nous a envoyé une très belle bouteille. Dommage qu'elle était déjà épuisée lors de la parution des résultats. La meilleur cote attribuée à ce whisky est de 91 points (attribués par 3 déguatateurs différents) tandis que la cote la moins élevée est de 74. Comme quoi, aucune bouteille ne fait l'unanimité. L'écart entre les cotes extrêmes est de 17 points.

Dede	Couleur : Ambré Nez : Démarre un sherry sec évoquant un Fino ou un Amontillado, accompagné de notes organiques de champignons noirs, de caoutchouc brûlé et de poudre noire se développant sur une trame plus gourmande de caramel, noix fraîches et abricots secs. Nez très sympathique bien que légèrement marqué par l'alcool avant aération. Bouche : L'attaque est franche et puissante, sur des arômes franchement organiques et soufrés mais sans que cela ne soit désagréable. Champignons noirs, caoutchouc, cacao amer, mais également notes acidulées de mandarine se partagent ici la vedette, avant que l'amertume des cerneaux de noix ne prenne le relais puis que qu'une subtile note exotique ne vous emmène vers la finale. Finale : Plutôt longue, elle laisse sur le palais le souvenir du soufre mêlé à l'exotisme de la papaye trop mûre et à l'amertume du cacao. Conclusion : Un excellent sherry cask qui lorgne plus du côté des arômes organiques et soufrés que vers la gourmandise. Ne plaira pas à tout le monde, mais tout à fait à mon goût.
jmputz	Couleur: Brun Un nez respirant à fond l'équilibre. Tout en finesse, ce nez aux allures indiscutables de sherry est agréablement complexe. Des odeurs de chocolat au lait, de sherry, de moka avec une impression de fraîcheur bien agréable en arrière-fond. Le sherry domine nettement en bouche également. ici aussi un bel équilibre et la fraîcheur du nez fait place à de très discrètes notes de tanins. La bouche aussi est assez complexe, chaude et laisse une excellente impression. Ici aussi quelques notes de chocolat. La finale est exceptionnellement longue. Toute la chaleur du sherry, ces agréables notes de chocolat et de moka persistent de longues minutes.
Jolie_Grenouille	Couleur : Acajou clair Nez : Crème brûlée, caramel, fruits secs avec quelques notes fumées... On est sur un sherry. L'alcool est très discret, bien intégré. Aucune perte à l'aération. Bouche : Du bon sherry bien fruité, un peu boisé, très sympa. On retrouve ces notes fumées assez agréable. L'alcool est toujours aussi discret. Finale: Longue, fruitée, gourmande. L'alcool est un peu plus présent ce qui renforce encore la finale... Vraiment agréable. Un whisky bien agréable à déguster (par exemple en fin de repas, avec un dessert au chocolat).

Corbuso

Couleur : Ambre Nez : Sulfureux, végétal, légèrement viandé et sur l’extrait de levure. Un sherry monster. Bouche : Riche, juteux, très fruité, sur la mandarine, la mûre, l’orange, la mélasse, les dates, un peu de souffre et d’extrait de levure. La finale est longue, collante, sirupeuse, sur le souffre, l’extrait de levure, de sirop de mais, la mandarine, la mûre et la confiture d’orange amère. Impression générale : Un sherry monster, avec les notes de levure, maggi et de souffre trop rélévées pour moi. A réserver pour les amateurs de sherry extrêmes.

Miltonduff 1980, Malts of Scotland (en)

The German bottler Malts of Scotland is increasingly popular with lovers of single malt. And he has not belied his reputation. This bottle which costs about 130 euros is a beautiful example of the fact that some usually poor rated distilleries can harbor treasures that only good bottlers manage to find. This Miltonduff finished in fourth position. As is always the case in WDTS, opinions are not unanimous about this bottle. His best score is 91 points while the lowest is 77, a difference of 14 points.

fresh and fruity nose. Attack on citrus like blood oranges with a hint of lemon. The mouth is round, a little woody. Alcohol brings a strong presence of depth. The flavors are still on citrus but this time the chocolate tip behind alcohol. The finish is long and powerful with notes of white chocolate and praline. the grassy side resurfaced providing a nice freshness to finish. Altogether a very seductive whisky with a very fine balance between alcohol / flavor / texture.

Corbuso

Colour: Straw Nose: Fresh, floral, slightly fragrant and clean. Taste: Grassy, fragrant, slightly malty and bitter, with some cooked apples and some gentian. The finish is short, round, fragrant, floral and slightly bitter. Impression: Not a bad whisky, rather simple fragrant and with a short finish. Not really my style.

L'embouteilleur allemand Malts of Scotland est de plus en plus prisé par les amateurs de single malt. Et il n'a pas volé sa réputation. Cette bouteille qui coûte environ 130 euros est un très bel exemple illustrant le fait que certaines distilleries peu cotées peuvent receler des trésors que seuls les bons embouteilleurs arrivent à  dénicher. Ce Miltonduff a terminé en quatrième position. Comme c'est toujours le cas dans les WDTS, les avis ne sont pas unanimes à propos de cette bouteille. Sa meilleure cote est 91 points tandis que la moins bonne est 77, soit une différence de 14 points.

nez frais et fruité. Attaque sur les agrumes comme l'orange sanguine avec une pointe citronnée. La bouche est ronde, un tout petit peu boisée. L'alcool très présent apporte de la profondeur. Les arômes sont encore sur les agrumes mais cette fois ci la praline pointe derrière l'alcool. La finale est longue et puissante avec des notes de chocolat blanc et de praline. le côté herbacé refait surface apportant une belle fraîcheur pour finir. Au total un whisky très séduisant avec un très bel équilibre alcool/arômes/texture.

Corbuso

Couleur : Paille Nez : Frais, floral, légèrement parfumé et propre. Bouche : Herbacé, parfumé, légèrement malté et amer, avec des notes de pomme cuites et de gentiane. La finale est courte, ronde, parfumée, florale et légèrement amère. Impression générale : Un whisky pas mauvais, mais relativement simple, parfumé et court en bouche. Pas vraiment mon style.

Glendullan 10 ans, Puits à Whisky (Jean Boyer) (fr)

L'idée de vendre du whisky "en vrac" où le client peut lui-même remplir sa bouteille aurpès de son caviste  est à l'origine de cette série qui connait un succès remarquable, d'une part à cause de l'originalité du projet mais aussi à cause du rapport qualité-prix très intéressant des whiskies de cette collection. Certes, ce Glendullan n'a pas fini en tête de classement pour cette session des WDTS, mais son score de 82,36 est renarquable. La cote la plus élevée obtenue est de 89 points tandis que sa cote la plus basse est de 73, c'est-à-dire un écart de 16 points.

Mars

Nez : La première chose qui me vient à l'esprit est un biscuit sablé. Ensuite, ce sont des arômes floraux, légèrement agrumique avec du citron vert, de la menthe(et plus particulièrement un cocktail tequila/menthe)et du carton. Après aération, le fruité agrumique ressort beaucoup plus. Bouche : Cireux, mielleux, doux, légèrement citronné, fruité(melon, entre autre), épices. Après aération, ici aussi le coté agrumique ressort beaucoup plus. C'est un peu moins doux. Les épices mettent plus de temps à apparaître. Finale : Biscuit au miel et/ou sablé, anis. Après aération le coté agrumique ressort fortement ainsi qu'un voile de fumée. Commentaires : Gagne à l'aération avec le développement du coté agrumique. Mais une légère amertume apparaît aussi. L'adjonction d'eau améliore la balance et le coté fruité.

Jean-Michel

Couleur : Vin blanc. Nez : Simple et pur, sur les fruits blancs du verger. Croustade aux pommes avec une pointe de cannelle. Un peu de vanille. Pas de défaut à ce niveau-là, mais manque un peu de fantaisie. Bouche : Toujours pas mal de fruits blancs. Association classique pomme-poire. Titre alcoométrique consensuel (46% ?). C’est propre, mais ça devient plus végétal et franchement amer. Quinine et jus de cactus. Bitter lemon. Finale : Sèche et salée. S’évanouit sur une sensation d’eau saumâtre et une amertume très prononcée. Commentaire : Au nez je pensais avoir affaire à un malt fruité simple et agréable, genre Lochside 91. La bouche, trop amère, m’a déçu.

Glendullan 10 years, Jean Boyer (Le Puits à Whisky) (en)

Mars

Nose: The first thing that comes to mind is a shortbread. Then they are floral notes, slightly citrusy with lime, mint (especially a cocktail with tequila / mint) and cardboard. After aeration, the citrusy notes gain some power. Mouth: Waxy, honeyed, sweet, slightly lemony, fruity (melon, among others), spices. After aeration, here too the citrus side gain in power. It's a little less sweet. Spices take longer to appear. Final: Biscuit with honey and / or shortbread, anise. After venting the citrus side get out and a veil of smoke appear. Comments: Gain with some aeration with the development of the citrus side. But also appears a slight bitterness. The addition of water improves the balance and the fruity side.

Jean-Michel

Color: Pale wine. Nose: Clean and simple, all on white orchard fruits. Apple crisp with a hint of cinnamon. A touch of vanilla. Flawless so far, but lacks fantasy and variety. Mouth: Quite some white fruits again. The usual apple-pear bundle. "Standard" ABV (46%?). Clean stuff, but becomes more and more grassy and quite bitter now. Cincona and cactus juice. Bitter lemon. Finish: Dry and salty. Vanishes, leaving a feeling of brackish water and some strong bitterness. Comment: At first nosing, I thought this would be a simple and enjoyable fruity malt, such as those 1991 Lochsides. The mouth, too bitter, was disappointing.

First session 2012: 2012-01

Beginning of this year marked a growing interest among producers of whisky for these blind tasting sessions organized by whisky-distilleries.info. The success is such that we could establish a timetable for the tasting until late June. We will do a pose during the summer months because it is difficult to judge a whisky at its fair value at that time and also because it is difficult to arrange a tasting with a score of people, given that there is always someone who is on vacation ...
This time we received two bottles of Caves de Becon (production of Jean Boyer, in the series "Le Puits à Whisky"), a bottle of Master of Malt (participating for the fifth time).Wilson & Morgan also sent us a bottle and last but not least, we had the pleasure of enjoying two bottles offered by Malts of Scotland.

This session was attended by 22 participants who produced 132 tasting notes. Despite the price difference between these bottles (thirty euros for the Puits à Whisky up to 200 euros for The Glenlivet Wilson & Morgan), the averages are attributed remain strangely close. The best rating being 86.86 assigned to the Glenlivet and the lowest rating was given to 10 years Bunnahabhain Puits à Whisky who got 80.59 points.

As the number of bottles began to be consistent, it seemed necessary to present results by type of bottles. Starting with  every day whisky (for a reasonable price) to finish in the passionates  whisky category  (for whom the price of the bottle is not an obstacle to the purchase) through the whiskies for connoisseurs who want  pleasure without breaking the bank.

Première session de 2012: 2012-01

Ce début d'année a marqué un intérêt grandissant auprès des producteurs de whisky pour ces sessions de dégustation à l'aveugle organisées par whisky-distilleries.info. Le succès est tel que nous avons pu établir un calendrier pour les dégustations jusque fin juin. Nous ferons une pose durant les mois d'été parce qu'il est difficile d'apprécier un whisky à sa juste valeur à cette période et aussi parce qu'il est difficile d'organiser une dégustation avec une vingtaine de personnes, étant donné qu'il y a toujours quelqu'un qui est en vacances...
Nous avons cette fois reçu deux bouteilles des Caves de Bécon (production de Jean Boyer, dans la série "Le Puits à Whisky"), une bouteille de Master of Malt (qui participe pour la cinquième fois). Wilson & Morgan nous a également fait parvenir une bouteille et last but not least, nous avons eu le plaisir de déguster deux bouteilles offertes par Malts of Scotland.

Cette session a vu la participation de 22 participants qui ont produit 132 notes de dégustation. Malgré la différence de prix entre ces diverses bouteilles (une trentaine d'euros pour les Puits à whisky jusque 200 euros pour le Glenlivet de Wilson & Morgan), les moyennes attribuées restent étrangement proches. La meilleure cote attribuée étant de 86,86 pour le Glenlivet et la note la moins élévée a été donnée au Bunnahabhain 10 ans Le Puits à Whisky qui a obtenu 80,59 points.

Comme le nombre de bouteilles commence à être conséquent, il m'a semblé nécessaire de présenter les résultats par catégorie de bouteilles. Partant du whisky de tous les jours (à prix démocratique) pour finir dans les whiskies de passionnés (pour qui le prix de la bouteille n'est pas un frein à l'achat) en passant par les whiskies de connaisseurs, qui veulent se faire plaisir sans toutefois se ruiner.
